What I’ve Been Up To: Drone Footage, Yard Move, And A New Arrival

March 19, 2021

This is my first blog post of 2021 and we are already well into March so I feel like I should catch you up with what I’ve been up to so far this year before I return to posting in real time. If you’ve read my previous posts, you will know that Adee and I had a lovely Christmas at home, just chilling out and enjoying endless forest hacks. It seems like at lifetime ago now but that’s where we were at the start of the New Year and I wanted to mention it as I never got to share our first drone recording experience. My dad very kindly brought his drone out on a ride with us just before we left and managed to get some footage which he put together to create the video below. It was Adee’s first encounter with the drone so we kept it at quite a distance and we didn’t end up getting a ton of footage due to a few technical issues, but Adee did really well with it and it was a good learning experience for all involved. I was very happy with our first attempt and I’m looking forward to hopefully getting some more recordings in the summer!

Unfortunately our wonderful break had to come to an end so Adee and I returned to work a week or so into January. I think Adee’s friends were rather happy to see him! Even though he coped very well being by himself over the break, I’m sure he missed his herd – at work he was turned out in a large group with approximately fifteen other geldings, give or take, which he loved since he can be very playful.

However, as you may have guessed from the title of this post, it wasn’t long before Adee was back on the road. I made the decision to move him to a different yard at the start of February for multiple reasons, the most important of which I will reveal in just a moment! It probably seems crazy to leave behind a yard that was literally on my doorstep, with amazing facilities, but it was the right decision for us and Adee has been really happy in his new home – he was literally head down, munching the grass the moment he arrived, completely unfazed. We are really lucky to have found such a lovely place, it’s a small private yard with just a few other horses, so quite different from the larger scale, busier yard that we’ve come from, and it really suits Adee’s needs. We haven’t got a school to work in but the ground drains really well so I’ve able to use one of the empty fields to work him in, and hopefully when lockdown restrictions lift a bit more I can trailer him up to use the indoor school at work (his old yard), which is only just down the road. The hacking is also really great where we are now and I am able to meet up with more local friends and their horses, which is nice for both of us to have some company.

Talking of company, let’s get on to the main reason for moving Adee, our new arrival… At the end of January, I got a new pony called Jimmy! At my previous yard there was only space for me to have one horse and it made sense for me to keep Adee and Jimmy so that they could be field companions for each other, so that brings us up to speed on what I’ve been up to the past few months… Keep an eye out for my next post which will tell you all you need to know about Jimmy!
